Traveling with Seniors
When it comes to traveling, people usually roll their eyes and sigh. Waiting through long airport security lines, the closeness of airplane seats, everything about it can cause headaches and irritation. However, the FAA has implemented some ways to take this stress off of seniors to make traveling a little bit easier and more relaxed for everyone involved.
Planning ahead is the biggest, most valuable step you can take when traveling with a senior, especially one with a physical or mental impairment. Make sure to keep their mental and physical limitations in mind (are they in a wheelchair?), and make sure to plan appropriately like remembering to bring proper medications, proper attire, etc.
Here are some other tips for traveling with seniors:
- In addition to stocking all of the senior’s medications as per their daily regimen, the caregiver might also need to obtain other medications for things like motion sickness, malaria, diarrhea, etc.
- The FAA has made some adjustments for seniors when it comes to getting through the airport and onto the plane, these include: those in wheelchairs and can’t stand up will have a variation of the screening process, those with pacemakers should get a pat-down at security, as opposed to going through the scanner, and individuals over 75 years of age can leave their light jackets and shoes on while passing through security.
- Seniors are often able to obtain airfare discounts. Make sure to go through the actual airline for these discounts as they may not be available through discounted or third party venues.
- Boarding assistance for seniors is always available, from getting on board first, to help with stowing bags, seniors can easily get, and request help from the staff.
- When traveling abroad there are a few things to keep in mind (for seniors and for everyone): don’t ride after dark in cars in developing countries; avoid the smaller local planes; always wear a seatbelt; and don’t travel around at night in areas that are questionable.
