Preparing Grandchildren for a Trip to an Assisted Living Community

Nothing brightens a senior’s day more than a visit from their grandchildren. The relationship between grandchildren and their grandparents is a strong one, and is beneficial to both generations. While grandchildren can learn a great deal from their grandparents, the grandparents can enjoy the younger generation that ultimately helps them feel rejuvenated and young.

Assisted living communities are often quite different from what grandchildren might otherwise experience, so it’s important to prepare them ahead of time before visiting Grandma and Grandpa. These tips can help ease the transition:
  1. Talk about what they will see and hear – preparing grandchildren for what they will expect upon entering an assisted living community is a great start. Show them pictures and explain that the grandparents don’t live their alone; there are many other people there, too. Because of this, they will have to be respectful, quiet, and polite, and not run around. If the grandparents suffer from impairment like dementia, talk to the child about it so they know what to expect.

  2. Call the assisted living community to set up a time to bring in the grandchildren. There will likely be a better time than others, and make sure to limit the length of the stay to one that is appropriate for the child’s age and temperament.

  3. Have the child make a gift for their grandparent. Creating a drawing, picking flowers, baking goodies, are all great ideas and will bring a smile to everyone’s face.

  4. During the visit, grandchildren and grandparents can play games together or even work on puzzles, regardless of the activity, they will enjoy the bonding time.

  5. Bring along school projects, videos, trophies, etc., to share with the grandparent so that they can feel a part of their grandchildren’s lives.

  6. The grandparents and grandchildren can always enjoy a walk outside if the weather is good, they can pick flowers together, blow bubbles, look for various objects together, go fishing, take pictures, etc.

  7. After the visit make sure to answer any questions the child might have about their grandparents or the community. Have them discuss the visit to help them cherish their memories.
